Wilhelm Raabe: Drei Federn. Ein Erziehungsroman Entstanden im Sommer 1864/65. Erstdruck bei Otto Janke, Berlin, 1865. Vollständige Neuausgabe mit einer Biographie des Autors. Herausgegeben von Karl-Maria Guth. Berlin 2015. Umschlaggestaltung von Thomas Schultz-Overhage unter Verwendung des Bildes: Edgar Degas, Lorenzo Pagan und der Vater des Künstlers, 1895. Gesetzt aus Minion Pro, 11 pt. Über den Autor: 1831 in Eschershausen im Weserland als Sohn eines Juristen geboren, bricht Wilhelm Raabe die Schule erfolglos ab, beginnt eine ebenfalls bald wieder aufgegebene Buchhändlerlehre und widmet sich umfangreicher Romanlektüre. 1854 beginnt er die Arbeit an dem Roman Die Chronik der Sperlingsgasse, die er 1856 unter dem Pseudonym Jakob Corvinus veröffentlicht. Ab 1857 erscheinen seine historischen Erzählungen in Westermanns Monatsheften. Nach zahlreichen ausgedehnten Reisen durch Deutschland übersiedelt Raabe nach Stuttgart und tritt u.a. dem Deutschen Nationalverein und dem Großen Klub bei. 1866 ist er an der Gründung der liberalen Deutschen Partei beteiligt. 1897 erscheint eine erste Monographie über Raabe und zu seinem 70. Geburtstag 1901 erhält der inzwischen verehrte Dichter mehrere hundert Glückwunschschreiben. Mit den Ehrendoktorwürden der Universitäten Göttingen, Tübingen und Berlin und dem Königlich Preußischen Kronenorden ausgezeichnet, erkrankt Wilhelm Raabe 1909 schwer und stirbt 1910 als Ehrenmitglied der Deutschen Schiller-Stiftung in Braunschweig. Wilhelm Raabe ist neben Theodor Fontane einer der großen Vertreter des poetischen Realismus. Seine plastischen Darstellungen realistischer Bildlichkeit sind mit seiner Sympathie für Außenseiter humoristisch stimmungsvoll. Die Figuren meiner Bücher sind sämtlich der Fantasie entnommen; nur selten ist das Landschaftliche nach der Natur gezeichnet. Das Volkstümliche fasse ich instinktiv auf.
