About the Book

Frenssen lebte von 1863 bis 1945. Er war Pastor, Schriftsteller mit Millionenauflage, warb in den USA, inoffiziell unterstützt von der Regierung und Reichspräsident Friedrich Ebert, für die Weimarer Republik, wandte sich dann den Nationalsozialisten zu und versuchte fortan sich und sein Werk als schon immer dieser politischen Richtung zugehörig hinzustellen und umzudeuten. Mit dem 1901 erschienenen Roman 'Jörn Uhl' setzte eine regelrechte Frenssen-Manie in Deutschland ein. Junge Menschen und Frauen feierten das Werk enthusiastisch. Als 1905 das Werk 'Hilligenlei' herauskam setzte eine beispiellose öffentliche Auseinandersetzung über den Autor ein. Erotismus, Liberalismus, Verrat der Heimatkunst wurde dem Autor vorgeworfen. Andere feierten ihn als einen Autor, der gegen verlogene Konventionen und für die Emanzipation der Frau anschrieb. Für das Ausland galt er fortan als bedeutendster Schriftsteller Deutschlands. Heute gilt Gustav Frenssen unter den Kennern als Erneuerer der Heimatkunstbewegung, der über das reine Idyll geschickt politische Themen der Zeit (u.a. Kolonialkrieg, Weltkrieg, Ruhrbesetzung, Höfesterben) und gesellschaftliche Strömungen (liberalerer Umgang mit der Sexualität, freigeistiges Christentum) aufnahm und sie, geschickt zu beschreiben verstand. Zu den frühen Bewunderern gehören Thomas Mann, Hermann Hesse und Rainer Maria Rilke. Die unterschiedlichsten Urteile kommen zu Wort. Die Chronik ist eine verlässliche Darstellung dieser umstrittenen Person. Drei Register und ein Quellen- und Sigleverzeichnis erschließen die Fülle der Information. Die Chronik ist dank der eingefügten Werk- und Briefauszüge zugleich ein Lesebuch zu dem Schriftsteller.
About the Author: Volker Griese, Dipl.-Ing. und Privatgelehrter, ist seit 1986 literaturwissenschaftlich tätig. Neben regionalgeschichtlichen Essays verfasste er Biografien über die holsteinischen Autoren Iven Kruse und Dietrich Theden, novellenartig zugespitzte Darstellungen entscheidender Momente der Schleswig-Holsteinischen Landes- und Kriminalgeschichte, Schriftstellerchroniken zu Detlev von Liliencron und Gustav Frenssen, eine Ortschronik sowie ein annotiertes Personenregister zum Werk Walter Kempowskis.
