Balzac ist 1799 geboren, in der Touraine, der Provinz des Überflusses, in Rabelais' heiterer Heimat. Im Juni 1799, das Datum ist wert, wiederholt zu werden. Das neue Jahrhundert kennt nicht mehr le petit général, nicht mehr den korsischen Abenteurer, sondern nur mehr Napoleon, den Kaiser Frankreichs. Zehn, fünfzehn Jahre noch - die Knabenjahre Balzacs - und die machtgierigen Hände umspannen halb Europa, während seine ehrgeizigen Träume mit Adlersflügeln schon ausgreifen über die ganze Welt von Orient zu Okzident. Es kann für einen alles so intensiv Miterlebenden, für einen Balzac nicht gleichgültig sein, wenn sechzehn Jahre ersten Umblicks mit den sechzehn Jahren des Kaiserreichs, der vielleicht phantastischesten Epoche der Weltgeschichte, glatt zusammenfallen. Denn frühes Erlebnis und Bestimmung, sind sie nicht eigentlich nur Innen- und Außenfläche eines Gleichen?
