Lorsque Nifo redigea, en 1529, le De Pulchro et Amore, il etait un philosophe reconnu, auteur d'une oeuvre considerable. Apres de brillantes etudes a l'Universite de Padoue, l'une des universites italiennes les plus renommees a la fin du XVe siecle, il obtint la chaire extraordinaire de philosophie des l'age de vingt-trois ans, et trois ans plus tard, la chaire ordinaire. Il enseigna ensuite dans de nombreuses autres universites, a Rome notamment, protege par le pape Leon X, ou encore a Pise, avant de s'attacher definitivement a Salerne. Malgre cette carriere remarquable, a la fois universitaire et aulique, representative des philosophes, ecrivains et artistes de son temps, Agostino Nifo reste un philosophe sinon inconnu, du moins largement meconnu.Actuellement, a part le De Auguriis, traduit en 1546 par Antoine du Moulin, et le De regnandi peritia, traduit en 1987 par Simone Pernet-Beau et Paul Larivaille, l'oeuvre de Nifo n'est pas accessible en francais. A l'exception d'une version italienne du De re aulica (Il Cortigiano del Sessa) en 1560 et d'une recente traduction espagnole du De Pulchro et Amore en 1991, les ouvrages de Nifo ne sont guere davantage traduits dans d'autres langues. En revanche, les trente dernieres annees ont vu se developper, surtout chez les chercheurs anglo-saxons, des etudes precises sur la partie logique et scientifique de la pensee de Nifo en meme temps qu'etait mise en lumiere l'importance de la pensee aristotelicienne dans l'Italie des XVe et XVIe siecles. Ainsi l'oeuvre de Nifo connut-elle une fortune fluctuante malgre l'interet qu'elle suscita chez des ecrivains, penseurs et chercheurs de renom. Ses nombreux deplacements, et les lacunes biographiques qui s'ensuivent, les multiples debats et controverses esquissent la figure d'un philosophe qui fut parfois difficile a cerner, meme pour ses contemporains, fervents admirateurs ou adversaires acerbes.
