About the Book

Part One: "The Grandmother Councils" It is 1960 and Nika has returned home looking forward to a long rest. After years of non-stop travel giving museum presentations about her Ojibwa culture, she thinks her service is done. Her Herb Mother has other ideas, insisting that Nika go to a Council meeting out East where the Clan Elders will discuss the world's problems. Nika is called upon by her Native American teachers to help save the Earth from being poisoned and pillaged. During the journey Nika becomes a witness and collaborator in the events that sparked the environmental movement. The time also celebrates the long awaited legal Freedom of Religion for Native People to practice their own traditions. Was it a coincidence that both came about in the same era?Part Two: "The Animal Councils" It is 1990 and Nika is again called to an East Coast Council. This time the Elders are invited to Councils of Animals, Plants and Elemental Forces that are facing the Sixth Extinction. The Grandmothers hope to learn how other Beings see the Earth's changing conditions and how they hope to survive. With help from Spirit maybe there can be hope for all.The beginnings of a worldwideeco-consciousnessthrough the eyes and spiritual insightof a Native American woman.
About the Author: Osahmin Judith Meister melded her own experiences with those of other eyewitnesses of these historic events to write "Earth Councils." This fictional story documents the beginnings of a worldwide eco-consciousness through the eyes and spiritual insight of a Native American woman. A naturalist and field biologist living near Madison, Wisconsin, Osahmin Judith Meister has also written "Their Time of Learning," the first book about Nika Mac Quarrie's education in Native traditions. Osahmin studied for twenty years with an Ojibwa herbalist of the Great Lakes, and is the author of a valuable and unique guide to herbal medicines, "The Spirit of Healing."
