About the Book

"... there is need of ... the virgin defiled ..." Ancient and modern religion are opposed in this final volume of the Goddess Trilogy. The corrupt Cardinal Vergiliae seeks to pervert the power of Christianity through the sacrifice of a mutilated nun and a strangely gifted child. . As winter gives way to the promise of spring, the battle to defeat him will range from the Oxford home of a retired academic to the papal town of Avignon, to the ruined Sanctuary of Juno Sospita, Juno the Saviour, in the Alban Hills. In this last encounter of the mystical three that will reconcile past and present, Jane Harrison will find that the enemy is also the anguish and confusion that good entails, when even goodness itself is multi-faceted and enigmatic.
About the Author: Joanna Leyland was born in Pontypool, South Wales, while the family were moving to Bath in Somerset; her first memory is looking up at the curve of Royal Crescent while lying in her pram. The family were to move twice more, to Romford, Essex, and Corby, Northamptonshire. From the ages of 10 to 14 her favourite writers were Rider Haggard, Jeffrey Farnol and Charles Dickens, all given to her as Christmas presents by her father, Vivian Brian Leyland. After leaving school, she went to Bedford College, University of London, where she read English. After graduating, she worked in various places, including the Macrobert Arts Centre at Stirling University, Dillon's University Bookshop, London, and Courage Brewery, London. In 1984 she moved to Italy, where she taught English at the University of Rome, "La Sapienza", eventually leaving teaching in order to write full time. Her interest in early Roman history and legend has given rise to her Goddess Trilogy, set in modern-day Italy: The Sacred Wood (2010), The White Sibyl (2013) and The Earth Mother. The collection of tales, Voices Unheard (2014), explores the vulnerable people behind Greek and Roman myth.
