About the Book

Edmond Maître (1840-1898), universellement connu comme l'ami intime des impressionnistes du groupe des Batignolles (Manet, Renoir, Fantin-Latour, Bazille...), se révèle ici sous un jour nouveau grâce à l'exhumation de sa correspondance inédite, l'ensemble à paraître en deux volumes. Ce tome second, qui concerne la période allant de ses trente-six ans à sa mort, nous fait partager, à travers la suite de cette correspondance, sa vie familiale, d'abord avec sa tante Cassilda, ses trois frères et son père Adrien, et plus spécialement ensuite avec sa belle-soeur Marie (Mme Léon Maître) - dont on connaît les deux portraits exécutés par son ami Fantin-Latour, revenue avec son mari après une longue expatriation au Pérou. Son premier cercle d'amis se réduit désormais aux époux Fantin-Latour, au docteur Blanche et son jeune fils Jacques-Émile (avec lesquels il se rendra à Londres) et quelques relations comme les musiciens Vervoitte et Scholderer. Malheureusement atteint d'une maladie dégénérative, il perdra progressivement ses facultés de lire, de jouer au piano et enfin d'écrire, luttant avec force d'âme jusqu'à la fin pour retarder l'issue du mal. Il s'éteindra à l'âge de 58 ans, laissant pour les siens et ses intimes le souvenir d'un homme qui aimait la vie, et par-dessus tout, l'élévation que procurent la Peinture, l'Opéra et les Lettres. Dans les Compléments de ce Tome II sont également rassemblés nombre de correspondances qu'il aura échangées avec Bazille et Fantin, ainsi qu'entre Fantin et Scholderer à son propos. Malgré sa discrétion extrême, Edmond Maître aura été immortalisé par les impressionnistes grâce aux portraits qu'en témoignage d'amitié, ils auront fait de lui: Manet, Renoir, Bazille, et Blanche (dont nous révélons ici une toile inconnue jusqu'alors). Enfin on découvrira deux articles magistraux lui ayant été consacré, il y a fort longtemps (1927 et 1978), et on entendra aussi, comme un écho lointain, le témoignage inédit et très touchant de sa propre nièce, Élisabeth de Cardenal.
