Educational gymnastics is a field that differs from traditional gymnastics. Written by two physical education professionals who have years of experience providing these learning experiences to children in elementary physical education programs, the text offers the following:

Learning Experiences
The learning experiences in the text are presented as a progression based on the development of children, both physically and cognitively. Each series of learning experiences is preceded by a cognitive focus, a skill focus, criteria for quality, and information on safety, equipment, and organization to maximize participation and learning. Teaching tips are offered throughout to help teachers develop lesson plans to fit the needs of their students.

Organization
Educational Gymnastics for Children is organized into three parts. Part I presents the theoretical background for educational gymnastics, comparing it to traditional gymnastics. This part explains how educational gymnastics meets children at their skill level and expands their skills within their level of competence. The components of balance are explored, and these chapters explain how to create a learning environment that is student centered, success oriented, and safe.

Part II presents learning experiences that will help children develop a functional understanding of the components of educational gymnastics. This part explores the skills of balance, weight transfer, and travel. It offers individual and partner sequences, both with and without equipment.

Part III addresses two vital questions for teachers: What is your goal for the children you teach? How do you know they have accomplished that goal? Standards and assessments are examined in this part.

About the Author: Tina J. Hall, PhD, is a retired professor in the department of health and human performance at Middle Tennessee State University. She taught elementary and middle school physical education for 18 years and has been in physical education teacher education since 2003. Dr. Hall has conducted numerous curriculum and content workshops and in-services for physical education teachers across the nation. She is a coauthor of Schoolwide Physical Activity: A Comprehensive Guide to Designing and Conducting Programs and Teaching Children Gymnastics. She joined the writing team for Children Moving: A Reflective Approach to Teaching Physical Education (in its 11th edition) in 2018. Dr. Hall is also an author of several articles in refereed publications.

Shirley Holt/Hale, PhD, is a retired physical educator from Linden Elementary School in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, where she taught physical education for 38 years. Dr. Holt/Hale is a former National Elementary Physical Education Teacher of the Year and has served as president of both the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (now SHAPE America) and the National Association for Sport and Physical Education. She is a coauthor of Children Moving: A Reflective Approach to Teaching Physical Education (in its 11th edition) and a contributing author for three other texts. She served as a member of the task force for the revision of the National Standards & Grade-Level Outcomes for K-12 Physical Education. Dr. Holt/Hale is a consultant in elementary physical education curriculum, assessment, and curriculum mapping throughout the United States.
