Der Königsprozess gegen Karl I. von England (1649), Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: "First I must know by what power I am called hither befor I will give answer. [...] Now, I would know by what authority, I mean lawful [...] I was brought from thence and carried from place to place [...] Remember I am your King - your lawful King - and what sins you bring upon your heads and the judgement of God upon this land, think well upon it [...] Therefor let me know by what lawful authority I am seated here and I shall not be unwilling to answer. [...]" Mit diesen Worten verweigerte King Charles I. am 20. Januar 1649 in der Westminster Hall die Aussage in dem gegen ihn geführten Prozess wegen Hochverrats und brachte den Vorsitzenden des Ausschusses, Lord President John Bradshaw, in gewaltige argumentative Probleme. Charles I. hatte das zu Grunde liegende Legitimitätsproblem des ganzen Prozesses offenbar sofort erkannt und bildlich gesprochen 'den Finger in die Wunde gelegt'. Bradshaws Lösung bestand aus der wenig überzeugenden Phrase "...in the name of the people of England, of which you are elected King...", welche den energischen Widerspruch des Königs erntete. Schließlich sah sich der wohl auch entnervte Bradshaw wegen der hartnäckigen Weigerung des Königs die Autorität des Gerichts anzuerkennen, gezwungen den Prozess zu vertagen und letztlich den König von den weiteren Verhandlungen auszuschließen. Während augenscheinlich an der fehlenden Ergebnisoffenheit des Prozesses kaum gezweifelt werden kann, ist die Frage der Legitimität nicht nur von der Nachwelt sondern auch von den Zeitgenossen äußerst unterschiedlich bewertet worden. Charles I. selbst hatte zu Beginn des Prozesses einen Text veröffentlicht in dem er die Rechtmäßigkeit der
