About the Book

Manfred Kruse erzählt die Romanze seiner Eltern Georg (*1915) und Ursula (*1925) Kruse in den Wirren des Zweiten Weltkrieges. Als Sohn eines armen Landarbeiters wächst Georg in einem kleinen Dorf bei Bremen auf und geht im Dezember 1934 zur Bremer Polizei, um nicht zeitlebens als Knecht arbeiten zu müssen. Anno 1936 verpflichtet Georg sich als Berufssoldat bei den Fallschirmjägern der Luftwaffe in Delmenhorst. Anno 1938 wird er als Obergefreiter-Unteroffiziersanwärter zum Wachbataillon in die Reichshauptstadt Berlin abkommandiert, wo er bis 1939 bleibt. Danach folgen die Fliegerhorste Schwerin und Wismar in Vorpommern als Ausbilder im Rang eines Unteroffiziers. Anfang 1943 kehrt Georg nach Berlin zurück, wo er die Berlinerin Ursula (*1925) beim Tanzen kennenlernt. Sie ist die Tochter eines Tischlers. Sie werden ein Liebespaar und verleben wunderschöne Monate in den Tanzlokalen, Bars und Varietés auf dem Kudamm. Georg ist dort wiederum beim Wachbataillon stationiert, jetzt als Feldwebel der Luftwaffe. Weihnachten 1943 verloben Georg und Ursula sich. Anfang 1944 wird Georg abkommandiert an die Westfront nach Frankreich. Er kommt zum Kriegseinsatz als Fallschirmjäger bei der alliierten Invasion in der Normandie. Im September 1944 gerät Georg in Belgien in die US-amerikanische Kriegsgefangenschaft und wird mit dem Dampfer nach New York verschifft, um zuerst in Wyoming und danach in Colorado im POW-Camp gefangen zu sein. Im Dezember 1946 wird Georg verschifft nach England in ein dortiges Kriegsgefangenenlager. Im August 1947 wird Georg entlassen in sein Heimatdorf, um kurz danach seine Verlobte Ursula im stark zerstörten Berlin zu besuchen, die er 3 Jahre nicht gesehen hat. Sie standen jedoch in Kontakt über die Kriegsgefangenenpost. Georg und Ursula heiraten noch im selben Jahr und wohnen zunächst beengt in Georgs Elternhaus. Ursula bringt anno 1950 einen Jungen (Manfred, der Autor) zur Welt. Anno 1951 ziehen Georg und Ursula nach Bremen mit ihrem Baby, wo Georg wieder
