Während draußen der 1. Weltkrieg tobt und andere Autoren sich mit diesem mörderischen Wahnsinn bereits auseinandergesetzt haben, startet Georg Hermann im Jahre 1917 seine autobiographische Pentalogie (Die Kette) mit dem ersten Band "Einen Sommer lang". Die Handlung spielt von April bis Oktober des Jahres 1899 - den aktuellen Krieg lässt der Autor erst viel später an seine Romane heran. Junge Paare, zu denen auch Fritz Eisner, des Autors Alter Ego, gehört, finden sich zur Verlobung. Kleinbürgertum trifft Bil-dungsbürgertum, alles ganz Wilhelminisches Zeitalter, noch "gute alte Zeit". Wer es sich leisten kann, verbringt den Sommer in einer Sommerwohnung, in diesem Falle bei Potsdam, wo die Witwe Lindenberg und ihre Töchter Annchen und Hannchen Hof halten. Hier laufen vor den Augen des Lesers die gesellschaftlichen Ereignisse der Jahrhundertwende ab. Liebe, Intrigen, Betrügereien, ein unglaublicher Gerichtsprozess und all die zwischenmenschlichen Beziehungen der künftigen Protagonisten geben dem Leser einen Einblick in die Zeit. Ein Hauch Fontane, ein Hauch von Keyserling - wer hier opulente Handlung erwartet, wird nicht auf seine Kosten kommen. Selbst ein Liebesdrama mit Todesfolge wird hier dezent inszeniert und von vielen kaum zur Kenntnis genommen. Dafür wird er aber ausgiebig entschädigt durch die Beschreibung der Charaktere der Personen und ihrer Verhaltensweisen. Fein beobachtend, süffisant, manchmal maliziös, doch immer voller Toleranz, mit einer Schwäche für Außenseiter. Kabale und Liebe mit viel Humor und Augenzwinkern, Erotik in ihrer zeitgemäßen Form. Dabei kommen Literatur, Kunst und Natur nicht zu kurz. Wer sich auf diesen Roman einlässt, wird belohnt durch eine angenehme Sprache, die Einführung in die Vorkriegswelt und immer wieder zufrieden schmunzelnd weiterlesen wollen - und vielleicht auch den Lebensweg dieser Gesellschaft weiter verfolgen wollen: ihren Weg vom Kaiserreich über den Krieg bis in die Weimarer Republik mit ihrer Hochinflation, mit Frit
