Bis 2050 ist ein weiterer Rückgang um bis zu 17,68 Millionen prognostiziert. Der Wettbewerb um qualifizierte Mitarbeiter wird sich in den nächsten Jahren erheblich verschärfen, weshalb Unternehmen nach Instrumenten und Wegen suchen, um sich für den sogenannten "war for talents"zu rüsten. Um sich im umkämpften Personalmarkt als potentieller Arbeitgeber behaupten zu können, setzen Unternehmen zunehmend auf gezielte Personalmarketingmaßnahmen. Diese werden an der definierten Zielgruppe ausgerichtet und sollen im Rahmen eines strategischen Gesamtkonzepts zu einem ganzheitlichen und unverwechselbaren Arbeitgeberimage beitragen. Unternehmen diskutieren hierbei neue Wege für das Employer Branding und nutzen das Potential der Social Media. Social Media hat die Kommunikation grundlegend verändert. Hatten potentielle Mitarbeiter bis Mitte der neunziger Jahre nur die Möglichkeit Jobinserate in Printmedien zu finden, konnten sie diese ab Ende der neunziger Jahre auf der Unternehmenskarrierehomepage und ab Anfang 2000 auf Onlinestellenbörsen wie Stepstone oder Monster finden. Seit 2005 kann an unternehmensbezogenenen Diskussionen auf Business-Netzwerken wie Xing teilgenommen, oder Informationen über Unternehmensveranstaltungen, sowie Erfahrungsberichte von Mitarbeitern auf dem sozialen Netzwerk Facebook eingesehen werden.
