La narración dispone desde el vamos lo fantástico, reclamando del lector desde un principio la suspensión de la incredulidad de la que hablaba Coleridge, ante la declarada existencia del animal que da título a la obra, un ser de rasgos mitológicos que, sin embargo, es la obsesión de un científico probado, un antropólogo argentino distinguido con el Premio Nobel. Si en principio resulta extraño que un animal sea el objeto de las preocupaciones de un antropólogo y no de un zoólogo, un etólogo, o eventualmente un paleontólogo, las características que se van conociendo de este ser -del que hasta entonces solo se han encontrado huesos y otros escasos vestigios- acaban por justificar el interés del científico. Al filo de la eternidad -se presume-, el zelofonte suele hibernar durante meses o incluso años, posee una capacidad mimética que le permite pararse en dos patas, entender y hablar diversas lenguas y una sabia prudencia que lo induce a callar y optar por la telepatía. En su plexo solar, alberga un arpón que es parte de su propio cuerpo y que, de ser disparado, provocaría tanto la muerte de quien lo recibiera como la del propio animal, estableciendo así una particular ética en relación con la vida y la muerte. Especie orgullosa de su elegancia ontológica, una vez muerto uno de ellos, sus congéneres devoran minuciosamente sus restos carnales para evitar al mundo el espectáculo de su corrupción y exhibir, en cambio, la estilizada belleza de su esqueleto, que incluso ha servido de material elemental -a ellos o a monjes de oriental sapiencia- para construir ciudades que son, al mismo tiempo, auténticos osarios. La forma de vida del zelofonte, palabra cuya etimología exacta se desconoce, constituye un emblema del amor universal y la comunión con la naturaleza. La búsqueda del que, presuntamente, es el último ejemplar de esa especie casi extinta tiene, pues, las características de una utopía. El científico la lleva a cabo como un último intento de devolver al mundo la paz y la armonía que la humanidad ha perdido por haber extraviado, según el sabio, el camino del amor verdadero. Esta aventura antropológica pone en juego a hombres y animales, al bien y el mal, a Oriente y Occidente, al pasado y el presente, a la religión y el mito, al amor y la muerte; y es atravesada por un episodio crucial de la historia argentina que no ha cesado de alimentar el imaginario de sus habitantes. Cuenta con la intervención siniestra de un embalsamador ambicioso y sin escrúpulos, la oposición de un hermano obsesionado por el ahorro y el favorable concurso de una hermosa vestal de Oriente y su hija no menos bella, un puñado de animales solidarios, una niña aborigen, prostitutas y procaces hombres de La Boca, deidades y animales subacuáticos, y un adolescente enamorado. La luminosidad de la escritura de Levinson logra dar cauce eficaz a este profuso conjunto de personajes y cuestiones que, en manos de cualquier otro escritor, habrían llevado el relato al caos y la confusión, si no al disparate.
