El largo trayecto que recorre un arroyo desde su nacimiento hasta el mar es la metáfora de la vida del hombre que Élisée Reclus, geógrafo francés de ideología anarquista, traza en este curioso libro, mezcla de geografía, filosofía y poesía. La importancia de Reclus en el ámbito de las ciencias se remonta a la década de 1930. Sus obras obtuvieron entonces tal relevancia, que hasta el propio Julio Verne las utilizó para describir los paisajes de algunas de sus novelas, como 20.000 leguas de viaje submarino.De las obras del geógrafo Élisée Reclus, extraordinariamente populares en la España de los años 30, se sirvió Julio Verne para situar la acción de sus novelas.Eloar Guazzelli, brasileño del estado de Rio Grande do Sul, ha dibujado un río de papel verdaderamente grande, de 45 metros de largo, que atraviesa, ora remansado ora vertiginoso.
About the Author: Élisée Reclus de verdadero nombre Jacques Élisée Reclus, también conocido como Eliseo Reclus en los países de lengua española, (nacio Sainte Foy la Grande, Gironda, Francia, 15 de marzo de 1830 - fallecio en Torhout, Bélgica, 4 de julio de 1905), geógrafo francés, miembro anarquista de la Primera Internacional. Creador de la Geografía social, y con innumerables trabajos sobre geografía humana y geografía económica están entre los mejor elaborados en la historia de estas ciencias. Segundo de una familia de catorce hijos de un pastor protestante, cuya madre descendía en línea directa de Enrique I de Inglaterra. Los hermanos de Elisée alcanzaron también gran notoriedad: Elías, el mayor, mitólogo y etnólogo, profesor de religiones comparadas en la Universidad Nueva de Bruselas; Onésimo, geógrafo experto en África; Pablo, notable cirujano, profesor de la Facultad de Medicina de París, Armando, oficial de la Marina francesa, explorador de la zona del Darién y uno de los padres del proyecto del Canal de Panamá. En 1842, cuando Elisée tenía doce años, abandonó la casa paterna con su hermano mayor Elías para ganarse el pan y conocer el mundo, dirigiéndose a Alemania, donde encontraron en Nemwied (provincias renanas) un puesto en el colegio dirigido por los hermanos moravos. La estadía en ese establecimiento, más bien lánguida, les permite familiarizarse con el alemán y otros idiomas. Los Reclus conocen en ese internado al futuro novelista británico George Meredith. Cuando Elisée regresa a Francia en 1847, se matricula, por indicación de su padre, en la Facultad de Teología de Montauban.
