En el verano de 1836, con diecinueve aÑos, JosÉ zorrilla acababa de llegar a Madrid huyendo de su familia --en realidad de su padre-- y de unos estudios de derecho que jamÁs tuvo intenciÓn de concluir, con la firme intenciÓn de triunfar como poeta. La capital de EspaÑa se hallaba entonces en plena efervescencia romÁntica y Zorrilla, ferviente admirador del nuevo estilo literario, se lanzÓ frenÉticamente a su cultivo, mientras sobrevivÍa realizando tareas diversas y haciÉndose pasar por hijo de un artista italiano.

Entre los meses que transcurrieron desde su llegada a Madrid y la conclusiÓn de la considerada hasta ahora primera obra dramÁtica del autor, el capricho Vivir loco y morir mÁs, concluido en el verano de 1837, la vida del autor del Tenorio estÁ aÚn llena de lagunas; especialmente durante el perÍodo anterior a su descubrimiento pÚblico el 15 de febrero de 1837, durante el entierro de Larra. Es sabida la atracciÓn e inclinaciÓn del poeta por el teatro, gÉnero en el que alcanzarÁ importantes logros en los aÑos cuarenta, llegando a convertirse en el referente de la dramaturgia romÁntica espaÑola en esos aÑos. No es de extraÑar, por tanto, que en aquellos primeros meses de su exilio madrileÑo, influido por los ecos del no lejano estreno del Don Álvaro o del mÁs reciente triunfo de su admirado GarcÍa GutiÉrrez con El trovador, Zorrilla se lanzara a la aventura de escribir un drama histÓrico a imitaciÓn de aquellos; especialmente del primero, con el que El condestable de Sicilia, guarda importantes concomitancias.

El estudio --acompaÑado de su correspondiente ediciÓn-- de este drama en tres actos y en verso publicado en Madrid sin fecha alguna, en una imprenta desconocida, que ha pasado desapercibido durante casi doscientos aÑos y del que apenas existen ejemplares, pone de manifiesto que nos hallamos, con bastante probabilidad, ante la primera obra teatral escrita y publicada por JosÉ Zorrilla.
