Cuando Pedro Lísperguer Wittemberg llegaba a América lo hacía con feudo imperial: "no embargante que es alemán y cualquier provisión que haya en contrario", siguiendo las propias palabras del emperador Carlos V. Comenzaba así un poderoso linaje, especialmente en Chile y Perú, que tuvo notable protagonismo en los siglos XVI y XVII, enlazándose con varios títulos nobiliarios. De esta familia desciende "la Quintrala", figura altamente mitificada y uno de los tópicos literarios más importantes de la cultura chilena, que es estudiado internacionalmente.

Una nueva y sorprendente investigación ha permitido conocer toda la etapa pre-americana del conquistador. En un relato apasionado exploraremos su pasado alemán, sus viajes junto al Emperador por el sur de Alemania y los Países Bajos, su permanencia en España junto a los condes de Feria, su viaje a Inglaterra para asistir a la boda de Felipe II y María Tudor, la situación política del momento y cientos de cosas más... curiosidades sin parar que nos conducen a la sublimación de un mito, que ante sus nuevos escenarios adquiere nuevos visos de modernidad.

Desde su salida de Worms, Alemania, en agosto de 1545, y a lo largo de seis meses, el cortesano alemán comparte vivencias con el Emperador. Durante su viaje por los Países Bajos, Lísperguer pasa por las ciudades de Maastricht, Lovaina, Bruselas, Brujas, Amberes y Utrecht, donde entra en contacto no sólo con la belleza de estas ciudades sino con las avanzadas corrientes intelectuales de su tiempo. Luego, permanece en España durante diez años, donde tiene conocimiento de "El gran capitán", el mito legendario de los Fernández de Córdoba. A través de los Suárez de Figueroa, el joven alemán se adentra en las figuras del marqués de Santillana, Jorge Manrique, y Garcilaso de la Vega, príncipe de los poetas españoles.

Durante otros siete meses, permanece en Londres junto a Felipe II y el conde de Feria, su embajador en Inglaterra. Allí conoce a las más encumbradas personalidades del imperio, en una de las urbes más cosmopolitas del momento, siendo testigo de las enormes inercias y desafíos por las que atraviesa la corte inglesa. Tras vivir grandes emociones y retos, el alemán abandona la isla en enero de 1555. Después, junto a Alonso de Ercilla, célebre autor de "La Araucana" y otros cortesanos, parte el 15 de octubre de 1555, de Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Cádiz, junto al nuevo virrey del Perú, don Andrés Hurtado de Mendoza, en dirección hacia las Indias. El grupo se verá confrontado con las difíciles navegaciones transoceánicas de la época y la experiencia casi irreal de cruzar el Istmo, todo ello compensado con la entrada triunfal que hacen en Lima, el 29 de julio de 1556, dónde Lisperguer permanecerá unos meses al servicio del virrey antes de su partida a la épica guerra austral.

Y aunque el relato acaba aquí, a través de una elaborada cronología, podremos conocer las principales realizaciones del célebre conquistador en América, así como sus pases y licencias para poder embarcar.
