Esta obra premiada en 1881 por la academia francesa, sirvió para consolidar la fama y el nombre de Anatole France. El crimen de Silvestre Bonnard contiene dos aventuras que le ocurren al mismo héroe, un sabio miembro del instituto de Francia. Este había ayudado a una joven pobre que iba a dar a luz en un frio granero, le había enviado un poco de leña y un árbol de navidad. Después de algún tiempo, Bonnard vuelve a encontrar a la joven quien se a casado con un príncipe ruso. Bonnard le cuenta a la joven rica su deseo de conseguir un extraño manuscrito que siempre se le escapa. Por fin lo encuentra en una subasta de Paris, pero sus ofertas son siempre superadas por un desconocido. Luego de tantos intentos fallidos, Bonnard abandona la causa. Al otro día, recibe el manuscrito acompañado de una tarjeta: Princesa Trepav.En la segunda instancia, Silvestre Bonnard se interesa por la huérfana Jean Alexander trabaja como profesora en el colegio de la señora Prefiere, quien intenta engañar a Bonnard y hacer que se case con ella. Bonnard indignado se aleja de la señorita Prefiere, entonces secuestran a Jeane. Sin pensarlo dos veces Bonnard decide ayudarla y la rapta, incurriendo así en el delito de corrupción de menores. No obstante, su crimen no pasa a mayores, puesto que el tutor de Jean, un acertado notario, desaparece el mismo día del rapto. Bonnard pasa a ser entonces el nuevo tutor de Jean, le da una dote vendiendo su biblioteca y la casa con su alumno Geles. Esta obra fina y de estilo delicado representa una ruptura con la frialdad del naturalismo. La gracia, la ternura y la emoción que se siente en el crimen de silvestre Bonnard la convirtieron en una obra que cambia abiertamente con los géneros anteriores y tradicionales; abriendo nuevas rutas expresivas, dejando de lado las antiguas del naturalismo.
