La investigación de estos crímenes irá haciendo aflorar inextinguibles odios y pasiones, soterradas durante lustros, de la mano del jefe de la policía municipal, convertido en ayudante del Oficial de la guardia civil de la policía judicial encargado del caso. Este personaje, atrabiliario, pendenciero, borracho y sin escrúpulos, es también un profundo conocedor de las entrañas del pueblo y de sus pobladores. Cínico y astuto, de pensamiento retorcido, el sargento de la policía municipal irá conduciendo al joven investigador de la guardia civil, por los recovecos y revueltas de las vidas, ocultos deseos y frustraciones que han engendrado la horrible vorágine de sangre y horror.
