About the Book

Hans van Meegeren, fue un pintor holandés que durante la II Guerra Mundial produjo mejores Vermeers que los originales, pudo engañar a toda la comunidad artística y al mismo Herman Goering, y debió finalmente confesar sus falsificaciones para salvarse de la pena de muerte.Esta ficción dramática está basada en la impresionante historia de Hans van Meegeren en la década de 1930 y durante la Segunda Guerra mundial, que logró falsificar y vender 6 Vermeers y dos Franz Hals por una suma actualizada a la fecha estimada en 100 millones de dólares. Uno de los Vermeers fue comprado por Herman Goering, segundo en la jerarquía del Tercer Reich. Al terminar la Segunda Guerra Mundial van Meegeren debió enfrentar la acusación de traidor a la patria y tuvo que confesar sus falsificaciones para salvar su vida. Estas confesiones fueron un terremoto en la comunidad pictórica de Holanda y del mundo entero, dado que sus falsificaciones habían sido aceptadas en forma unánime, y una de ella, el Cristo en Emaús se consideraba el mejor Vermeer de todos. Esta ficción, basada en hechos reales, nos lleva a reflexionar acerca del concepto de autenticidad en el arte y la validez de los conceptos tradicionales de verdad y belleza: ¿Un cuadro deja de ser bello cuando se comprueba que es una falsificación?
