About the Book

This book supplies a vision of the future of electricity supply systems and CIGRÉ's views on the know-how needed to manage the transition towards them.

A variety of factors are driving a transition of electricity supply systems to new supply models, in particular, the emerging use of renewable sources, environmental factors, and developments in ICT technologies. These factors suggest that two models for power network development are possible, and not necessarily exclusive:

1. An increasing importance of large networks for bulk transmission capable of interconnecting load regions and large centralized renewable generation resources including offshore, as well as to provide more interconnections between the various countries and energy markets.

2. An emergence of clusters of small, largely self-contained distribution networks, which include decentralized local generation, energy storage and active customer participation intelligently managed so that they are operated as active networks providing local active and reactive support.

The most likely shape of the electricity supply systems of the future will include a mixture of the above two models, since additional bulk connections and active distribution networks are needed in order to reach ambitious environmental, economic and security-reliability targets. This book provides a concise and complete reference of the technological developments for futures electrical systems. It is written and reviewed by experts and chairmen of the sixteen Study Committees that form the Technical Council of CIGRÉ, the International Council on Large Electric Systems.

About the Author: CIGRÉ Study Committee B5 aims at facilitating and promoting the progress of engineering and the international exchange of information and knowledge in the field of protection and automation. The committee also aims at adding value by means of synthesizing state-of-the-art practices and developing recommendations.

Study committee B5 covers principles, design, applications, coordination, performance and asset management of:

  • System Protection
  • Substation Control and Automation
  • Remote Control Systems and Equipment
  • Metering Systems and Equipment

All technical, organisational and economical aspects are considered including staff education and training. Emphasis is placed on design and application of digital technology and modern integrated system approach including hardware and software for the acquisition of system state information, local and remote data communication, and execution of control commands.

Professor Nikos Hatziargyriou received the Diploma in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering from NTUA (National Technical University of Athens) and MSC and PhD degrees in Electrical Power Engineering from UMIST, Manchester. He is Chairman and CEO of the Hellenic Distribution Network Operator (HEDNO). Since 1984 he is a faculty member at the Power Division of the Electrical and Computer Engineering School of the National Technical University of Athens. For six years he was Deputy CEO of the Public Power Corporation (PPC) of Greece, responsible for Transmission and Distribution, island DNO and the Center of Testing, Research and Prototyping. He is Fellow Member of IEEE, past Chair of the Power System Dynamic Performance Committee, Honorary member of CIGRE and past Chair of CIGRE SC C6 "Distribution Systems and Distributed Generation". He is Chair of the EU Technology and Innovation Platform on Smart Networks for Energy Transition. He has advanced the state of the art in the areas of Distributed and Renewable Energy Sources through his involvement in numerous projects performed for electric utilities and manufacturers in Europe, for both fundamental research and practical applications. He is author of the book "Microgrids: Architectures and Control" and of more than 200 journal publications and 500 conference proceedings papers. He is included in the 2016 and 2017 lists of top 1% most cited researchers.

Iony Patriota de Siqueira, PhD in Electrical Engineering, MsC (Honours) in Industrial Engineering, MBA in Information Systems, and a Registered Professional Engineer in Electrical Engineering with over 35 years experience in protection, automation and maintenance management. Distinguished Member and International chairman of CIGRE Study Committee on Protection and Automation, Brazilian representative in the Technical Committee 57 of IEC, convenor of ABNT Study Commission on Management and Information Exchange in Power Systems and CIGRE Working Group on Methods for Specification of Functional Requirements of Protection, Automation, and Control. A post-graduate teacher at Federal and State Universities of Pernambuco, recipient of Brazilian Engineering Award and the commendations Technical Committee Award and Distinguished Member from CIGRE.
