Nicht selten erschöpft sich das Physiklemen im Grundstudium an der Hochschule doch mehr oder minder im "blinden" Lernen von Fakten, Glei- chungen und Formalismen. "Lernen durch Gewöhnung" ersetzt ein Lernen, das sich mit einem tiefergehenden Verstehen der Zusammenhänge verbin- det. Es geht fast vollständig verloren, daß auch physikalische Fakten und Theorien immer erst vermutet, erdacht, produziert und gegen denkbare Alternativen durchgesetzt werden müssen und daß diese Prozesse stets auch durch kultur- und sozialgeschichtliche Gegebenheiten beeinflußt werden. - Diese Ideen waren Anlaß und Ausgangspunkt der vorliegenden Arbeit, die als Dissertation am Fachbereich Physik der Universität Oldenburg einge- reicht und genehmigt wurde. Sie setzt sich das Ziel, Material für Kurse be- reitzustellen, in denen den genannten Gesichtspunkten am Beispiel der Ge- schichte der Elektrodynamik nachgegangen werden kann. Zudem soll die Struktur der klassischen Elektrodynamik durch Schilderung ihrer Genese aufgeschlüsselt und damit transparent gemacht werden. Dabei gilt es, die Geschichte nicht unzulässig zu vereinfachen, vielmehr sie in wissen- schaftshistorisch vertretbarer Form darzulegen. Ich danke allen, die durch Anregungen, Diskussionen, Kritik und hand- werkliche Hilfe zum Werden meiner Arbeit beigetragen haben. Meinem Lehrer Dr. Falk Rieß bin ich für seine Geduld und seine Ratschläge zu be- sonderem Dank verpflichtet.
