§ 1. Problemstellung Das Interesse in der Geophysik an Problemen der elektromagnetischen Induktion in räumlichen Lei- tern wurde wesentlich verstärkt durch die erdmagnetische Entdeckung ausgedehnter Leitfähigkeitsano- malien im vergangenen Jahrzehnt, wie z, B. in Norddeutschland (FLEISCHER [5, 6), SCHMUCKER[15)), Systematische Unterschiede in den erdmagnetischen Variationen, wie sie hier und auch in anderen Ge- bieten (Japan, Nordamerika) an benachbarten Stationen aufgefunden wurden, ließen ganz allgemein die Möglichkeit erkennen, mittels erdmagnetischer Registrierungen Aufschluß über den tieferen Untergrund, insbesondere über die Verteilung der elektrischen Leitfähigkeit, zu gewinnen (BARTELS [13) ). Die lo- kalen Unterschiede wurden gedeutet als reiner Induktionseffekt: Durch das Magnetfeld der zeitlich vari- ablen Ströme in der Ionosphäre werden im elektrisch leitenden Untergrund ebenfalls Ströme induziert, deren Magnetfeld sich als "innerer Anteil" dem Feld der Ionosphärenströme ("äußerer Anteil") überlagert und zusammen mit diesem gemessen wird. Inhomogenitäten oder eingelagerte Anomalien der Leitfähig- keit bewirken dabei ein ebenfalls anomales Verhalten des inneren Anteils der beobacfiteten Variation. Das Bestreben ist, umgekehrt aus dem anomalen inneren Anteil der registrierten Variationen Kenntnis zu er- langen über Leitfähigkeitsanomalien im Untergrund (Erdmagnetische Tiefensondierung). Die hierbei auftretenden Probleme sind in mancher Hinsicht ähnlich denen, wie sie bei anderen Me- thoden - auch statischen, etwa der Magnetostatik - auftreten. Ein direktes Problem ist zunächst die Be- stimmung eines Störfeldes sowie des zugehörigen Gesamtfeldes durch ihre Berechnung für geometrisch einfache Körper oder durch Modellversuche.
