About the Book

Die Tradition der JAKOBITENLIEDER entstand, als der König von England JAKOB II im Jahre 1689 versuchte, seinen Thron zurück zu erobern und mit den von seinem Sohn und seinem Enkelsohn Prinz Karl angezettelten Aufständen. Nur wenige der vielen damaligen Stücke sind heute noch bekannt. Der Rest ging verloren, infolge seines anekdotischen Charakters oder weil er als Schrift- oder Drucksache seine Besitzer gefährdete. Als James Hogg sich anschickte, möglichst viele Jakobitenlieder zu sammeln, die er in den Jahren 1819 und 1821 veröffentlichte, kreierte er ein neues GENRE, das darin bestand, echte Altlieder zu rezyklieren oder gar neue Lieder zu jakobitischen Themen ex-nihilo zu schaffen, was ihm bald viele andere Autoren nachmachten, besonders im Zeitalter der Romantik.Zum Unterschied zu diesen englischen Liedern, sind die LIEDER IN GÄLISCHER SPRACHE, insbesondere diejenigen, die anlässlich des Aufstands vom Jahre 1745 geschrieben wurden, so alt wie die Ereignisse, die sie schildern. Die meisten wurden von dem Volkskundler JOHN LORNE CAMPBELL 1932 unter dem Titel "Hochlands-Lieder vom Jahre 1745 / Orain Ghàidhealach mu Bhliadhna Theàrlaich" herausgegeben. Meistens von einfachen Leuten verfasst, geben sie Einblick in die vorherrschenden Gedanken und Beweggründe der schottischen Hochländer, die eine entscheidende Rolle in den Aufständen spielten: Leidenschaftliche Anhänglichkeit an das gesetzmäßige Königshaus, Wunsch nach Wiederaufnahme der Kampfhandlungen, damit das schimpfliche Verbot von Hochlands-Tracht und Waffen, das für alle Clans galt, aufgehoben würde... Diese Barden waren übrigens sehr weit davon entfernt, die großen politischen und kulturellen Strömungen ihrer Zeit zu verkennen. Anhand von elf herausgesuchten Gedichten bemüht sich CHRISTIAN SOUCHON, nicht so sehr die wörtliche Bedeutung, als, in "singbaren" Übersetzungen, den gefühlsmäßigen Gehalt dieser Texte zu übermitteln, der in der schottischen Seele tief verwurzelt ist: den Drang eines Volkes, allem Missgeschick zum Trotz, seine Identität zu proklamieren.
