About the Book

Eliza Tillinghast Vilette Duncan, 1796-1878, was a typical woman of her times, touched by slave-trading and abolition, by the loss of children and the isolation of the Ohio frontier. She was remembered in the Western Reserve as the woman who named the City of Massillon after Jean Baptiste Massillon, Bishop of Clermont. She was also a woman who left behind all that was familiar to her, in order to step gingerly and yet forcefully into the unknown. An only child, Eliza became a wife, mother, and grandmother, and perhaps a shopkeeper, a businesswoman, a pacifist, and even a closet suffragette. In this volume, JoAnn Streeter Shade begins with the few known facts preserved from Mrs. Duncan's life, places her in the rhythm and context of her day, and weaves an imagined memoir of adventure, loss and love.
About the Author: JoAnn Streeter Shade has walked alongside many women in a variety of settings for more than thirty-five years, and enjoys writing about women from a historical perspective, as she did in The Other Woman: Exploring the Story of Hagar, and in WomanVoices: Speaking from the Gospels with Power. She does consulting work for the Massillon Museum, an art and history museum in Ohio, and has served in Salvation Army congregations and social service programs, and ministered at North Coast Family Foundation, a Christian counseling center in Northeast Ohio. She is married to Larry, is the mother of three adult sons, Greg, Drew and Dan, and Lauren, a beloved daughter-in-law, and is Nana to the lovely Madelyn Simone. With an M.A. in pastoral counseling and a D.Min. in the Women in Prophetic Leadership track from Ashland Theological Seminary, she combines her academic training with a writer's eye, a pastor's heart and a grandmother's joy through Gracednotes Ministries.
