März 2003 begann die "Operation Iraqi Liberation", die mit dem Sturz des irakischen Diktators Saddam Hussein enden sollte. Doch nicht nur Koalitionstruppen aus den USA, Großbritannien und anderen alliierten Staaten überquerten die Grenze zwischen Kuwait und dem Irak. Auch Mitglieder einer Berufsgruppe, die sich im Normalfall nicht mit Panzern und Militärfahrzeugen fortbewegt, waren hautnah beim Einmarsch mit dabei - Journalisten, Reporter und Kameraleute. Bis zu dieser offensichtlichen Zeitenwende war die Medienstrategie der US-Streitkräfte in zahlreichen bewaffneten Konflikten von Informationsverknappung und von umfangreichen Zugangsbeschränkungen für Journalisten für die jeweiligen Kampfgebiete geprägt. Schnelle Internetleitungen, globale Satellitenverbindungen, mobile Kommunikationsmöglichkeiten und innovative Datenübertragungstechnologien hatten in der Vorphase des Irakkrieges in US-Regierung und Generalstab aber die Überlegung reifen lassen, dass die bis dato gängige Medienstrategie kaum mehr Erfolg versprechend sein würde. Aus diesen Überlegungen heraus wurde für den Irakkrieg mit dem embedded journalism eine neue Medienstrategie entwickelt. Damit hofften die Medienstrategen des Pentagons nicht mehr zu unterbindende Kriegsberichterstattung wenn schon nicht offen, so zumindest unterschwellig im eigenen Sinne beeinflussen zu können. Im Rahmen dieses Konzeptes wurden akkreditierte Journalisten Einheiten der britischen und der US-Streitkräfte zugeteilt und konnten diese während des Irakkrieges begleiteten. Die Pressevertreter erhielten für ihre Berichterstattung vor Ort Informationen aus erster militärischer Hand und bekamen hautnahe Eindrücke von der Front.
