Herausgegeben von Herbert G. Göpfert in Zusammenarbeit mit Karl Eibl, Helmut Göbel, Karl S. Guthke, Gerd Hillen, Albert von Schirmding und Jörg Schönert, Band 1-8, München: Hanser, 1970 ff. Die Paginierung obiger Ausgabe wird in dieser Neuausgabe als Marginalie zeilengenau mitgeführt. Umschlaggestaltung von Thomas Schultz-Overhage unter Verwendung des Bildes: Gabriel von Max, Der Wirtin Töchterlein, 1876. Gesetzt aus der Minion Pro, 11 pt. Über den Autor: 1729 in Kamenz in der Lausitz als Sohn eines Pfarrers geboren, studiert Gotthold Ephraim Lessing in Leipzig Theologie und Philosophie. 1747 veröffentlich er achtzehnjährig erste Gedichte und Erzählungen und begeistert sich für die Werke von Molière und Voltaire. In Berlin schreibt er Kritiken für die Berlinische Privilegierte Zeitung und schreibt an ersten Dramen. Zum Magister der Philosophie promoviert, nimmt er am literarischen Leben Berlins teil, ist mit Friedrich Nicolai, Moses Mendelssohn und Ewald von Kleist befreundet und veröffentlicht 1755 das erste deutsche bürgerliche Trauerspiel Miß Sara Sampson. Zum Mitglied der preußischen Akademie der Wissenschaften gewählt, wird er nach einer schweren Erkrankung 1767 Dramaturg am neuen Hamburger Nationaltheater und veröffentlicht die Hamburgische Dramaturgie. 1770 bis 1781 ist er herzoglicher Bibliothekar in Wolfenbüttel und wird 1771 Mitglied der Hamburger Freimaurerloge Zu den drei Rosen. 1779 erscheint Nathan der Weise und wird mit seinem Appell an Toleranz und Humanität zu einem Hauptwerk der Aufklärung.
