In vielen Unternehmen wird heute mit einem solchen Mitarbeiter-Portal gearbeitet. Eine durchgängige Kommunikation mit den Mitarbeitern in allen Bereichen ist somit möglich. Über die Terminals im Unternehmen können alle Mitarbeiter, auch die ohne eigenen Computer am Arbeitsplatz, in die Informationsprozesse des Unternehmens eingebunden werden. Doch was ist Employee Self Service nun wirklich? Employee Self Service (ESS) kann nicht wortwörtlich übersetzt werden. Eine sinngemäße Wiedergabe könnte mit Arbeitnehmerverwaltung treffend beschrieben werden. Es ist für die Mitarbeiter eines Unternehmens ein Selbstbedienungsservice. Dies soll über ein Mitarbeiter-Portal realisiert werden. Die computergestützte Personalverwaltung ist auch als Internet beziehungsweise Intranet bekannt. Die Mitarbeiter können sich selbst einloggen und eigene Daten anzeigen lassen, eintragen oder auch ändern. So tragen die Arbeitnehmer die Verantwortung für ihre Daten. Damit soll wiederrum eine Entlastung für die Personalabteilung des Unternehmens geschaffen werden. Es ist wichtig, zu beachten, dass die jeweiligen Mitarbeiter mit der Pflege ihrer eigenen Daten nicht überfordert sind und dadurch eventuell ihre eigentliche Arbeit vernachlässigen.
