About the Book

Leonardo da Vinci proved that engineering and graphic design are not mutually exclusive. In fact, an engineer's ability to communicate visually not only assists in documentation and communication, but it also promotes brainstorming and facilitates playful manipulation of ideas. Regrettably, today's engineers become specialists, and don't receive training to explore their visual side. As you know, engineering is a very visual endeavor. And if you're not developing something that people hold or look at, you're sketching ideas or documenting what you created. The role of the engineer has also changed. Today's engineers are expected to build graphical user interfaces, websites, PowerPoint presentations, and other products where they lack-not talent, but education. Too many of today's engineers are needlessly intimidated by art and graphic design. This is baffling because graphic design depends on math and physics-things that engineers are otherwise trained to do. "Engineering Approaches to Graphic Design", was written in a way that not only teaches the fundamentals of graphic design, but does so in a way that leverages what engineers already know.
About the Author: Michael Schrenk is a software engineer, who runs a Las Vegas based competitive intelligence consultancy. He consults and speaks about information security and data privacy all over the world. Mike is also the author of "Webbots, Spiders, and Screen Scrapers (No Starch Press, San Francisco)". He has lectured at journalism conferences in Belgium and the Netherlands and has created several weekend data workshops for the Centre for Investigative Journalism in London. Along the way, he's been interviewed by BBC, the Christian Science Monitor, National Public Radio, and many others. Mike is also an eight-time speaker at the notorious DEF CON hacking conference. He may be best known for building software that over a period of a few months autonomously purchased over $13 million dollars worth of cars by adapting to real-time market conditions.
