Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2015 im Fachbereich Germanistik - Neuere Deutsche Literatur, Note: 1,3, Universität Hamburg, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: In einer Zeit, in der Streit allenfalls im Feuilleton ausgetragen wird - man könnte auch dysphemistisch von einem "Elfenbeinturm" sprechen -, muss man eine Lichtgestalt wie Karl Kraus vermissen. Der österreichische Satiriker (1874-1936) ist in der von Konsens- und Kommerzkultur geprägten Gegenwart allenfalls Intellektuellen ein Begriff; der Diskurs über das Werk Karl Kraus' hat sich weitgehend hinter Hochschulmauern zurückgezogen. Und dennoch lassen sich Aktualität und Relevanz all dessen, wofür Karl Kraus stand und was sein Werk auszeichnete, nicht hoch genug einschätzen. Seiner Strahlkraft - die insbesondere in seinem Hauptwerk "Die Fackel", dem Drama "Die letzten Tage der Menschheit" und dem Text "Die dritte Walpurgisnacht" fortdauert - erlag auch der junge Elias Canetti, ein Mann, dessen Entschluss, Schriftsteller zu werden, sich nach und nach forcierte. Aber erst als es zur Abwendung von seinem langjährigen Idol Karl Kraus kam - eine Loslösung, die in dieser Arbeit untersucht werden wird -, etablierte sich Elias Canetti selbst und veröffentlichte Mitte der 30 er Jahre des vorigen Jahrhunderts seinen Roman "Die Blendung". Die Rolle, die zeitgeschichtliche Ereignisse in der einseitigen Verehrungsbeziehung spielen, hat Canetti in seinen Memoiren und seinen Essays zu Karl Kraus bereits deutlich hervorgehoben. So ist es verständlich, dass in dieser Arbeit die zwei prägendsten politischen Ereignisse, die Canettis Denken auf Kraus zubewegten und schließlich von ihm abwandten, auch stark gewichtet werden müssen. Dies sind der Wiener Arbeiteraufstand von 1927 und die deutschen und österreichischen Umbrüche der Jahre 1933 und 1934, in deren Folge Kraus nach Meinung vieler seiner Anhänger als Gewissen Österreichs versagte.
