Dos personajes, Marilyn Monroe y Jackie Kennedy abren y cierran el libro, con dos capítulos que transcurren en los años 60, el primero, y en 1994 el último. El resto de la novela, narra dos historias confluyentes, que ocurren en la actualidad. A partir de la aparición de un diario de un francotirador fallecido, dos personajes, un profesor y un periodista, intentarán encontrar un sentido a sus vidas, que consideran llenas de frustraciones.Esta cuarta novela de la serie, que trata de forma esperpéntica temas contemporáneos, ironiza sobre una Marilyn reclutada como informadora soviética y las teorías conspirativas sobre el asesinato de Kennedy (aquí se desenmascara definitivamente, el ya desprestigiado informe de la Comisión Warren sobre el magnicidio, al dar una explicación muy coherente de aquellos hechos.Por supuesto, encontramos a otros personajes de la serie: Maria Petrova, la anciana agente rusa, Mireia, la agente freelance china adoptada por una familia barcelonesa, Esther, la agnóstica agente del Mossad, Boris, el fiel guardaespaldas de Petrova, Dimitri, con su cerebro dañado por el alcohol y sus años de boxeador, pero con su vitalidad intacta pese a su edad y, acaparando mayor protagonismo que en otras novelas, el singular comisario Dupont y su peculiar equipo.En paralelo, presenta un segundo plano, en el que el autor (ficticio), como en anteriores obras, dialoga con sus personajes, introduce a alguno en la novela a petición del mismo, e intenta defenderse de las acusaciones de éstos con la metáfora de la composición de las telas, formadas por el entretejido de hilos de trama y de urdimbre. El autor se atribuye la urdimbre (substantivo del verbo urdir), mientras que afirma que la trama la crean los propios personajes y que no puede incidir sobre ella, sin crear paradojas en el universo de la ficción, es decir, sin forzar la novela.Al mismo tiempo, se mantiene el juego de provocación del autor al lector, con las notas a pie de página, para distanciarlo de lo narrado, y recordarle que lo que lee pertenece al mundo de la ficción.
