Bildung hat sich zur bedeutsamsten Ressource für die Sicherung des Lebensstandards entwickelt. Obwohl Bildung damit die wichtigste Voraussetzung für Lebenschancen darstellt, haben nicht alle Mitglieder der Gesellschaft die gleichen Chancen darauf, einen guten Bildungsabschluss zu erreichen. Zwar konnten durch den Ausbau der Realschulen, Gymnasien und Hochschulen die Bildungschancen aller sozialen Schichten der deutschen Gesellschaft ausgebaut werden, jedoch herrschen immer noch gravierende Differenzen in den Zugangschancen in Abhängigkeit der sozialen Herkunft der Kinder. Dass die deutsche Bildungsexpansion nur vermeintlich zur sozialen Chancengleichheit geführt hat, wurde vor allem durch die im Jahr 2000 durchgeführte PISA-Studie deutlich. Kaum ein anderes Land wies dabei eine so große Diskrepanz zwischen den Kompetenzen der Kinder aus verschiedenen Schichten auf wie Deutschland. Damit bildungspolitische Maßnahmen aber auch etwas zur Angleichung der Bildungschancen beitragen können, muss zunächst bekannt sein, wie ungleiche Chancenverhältnisse zwischen den sozialen Schichten entstehen und fortgeführt werden. Es existieren verschiedenste Theorien, die dieses Phänomen zu erklären versuchen. In dieser Arbeit sollen zwei dieser Erklärungsansätze genauer betrachtet werden. Zum einen die Kapitaltheorie Pierre Bourdieus und Jean-Claude Passerons, welche die ungleiche Verteilung kulturellen Kapitals in der Gesellschaftsstruktur für bestehende Bildungsungleichheiten verantwortlich macht. Und zum anderen die zu der Rational-Choice-Theorie gehörende Ansätze Raymond Boudons und Hartmut Essers, welche davon ausgehen, dass rationale Bildungsentscheidungen, die in Abh
