Jahrhunderts, Note: 2,7, Universität Mannheim, Veranstaltung: Adam Smith: A theory of moral sentiments, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: In erster Linie ist Adam Smith durch sein ökonomisches Werk bekannt, aber auch als Moralphilosoph trägt er mit "Theorie der ethischen Gefühle" (1759) zu einer philosophischen Disziplin bei. Die Sympathie ist das "konzeptuelle Rückgrat" seiner Moralphilosophie und macht damit den Kern von Smiths moralphilosophischer Konzeption aus. Deswegen untersucht diese Arbeit die Sympathie genauer und stellt dar, dass sie mehr als ein Gefühl ist. Zuordnen lässt sich Smith philosophiehistorisch der Strömung des Moral Sentimentalism, welche unseren Gefühlen und Neigungen eine wichtige Rolle in moralischen Fragen zuschreibt. Die Art und Weise wie Smith deskriptiv das Wirken der Sympathie in unserem Alltag beschreibt erinnert an ein Gefühl. Da die Sympathie durch Gewohnheit und Erziehung zu der Grundlage unseres sozialen Lebens und auch der Reflektion der eigenen Person geworden ist, handeln wir in gewisser Weise automatisch und intuitiv in ihrem Sinne. Die zahlreichen Beispiele, die Smith anführt, unterstützen diesen Eindruck. Im Folgenden wird die Sympathie in ihre einzelnen Komponenten zergliedert um zu untersuchen, ob die Sympathie als ein Gefühl zu verstehen ist. Diese Arbeit fokussiert sich darauf die Sympathie als einen mehrschichtigen Prozess zu interpretieren, der durch Einbildungskraft und Rationalität eine eigene Qualität entfaltet. Smiths Begriff der Sympathie soll von zwei Perspektiven ausgehend und dadurch jeweils innerhalb eines klaren Bezugsrahmens erläutert werden. Einerseits kann deswegen die Fragestellung aus zwei Perspektiven untersucht werden und andererseits wird die Argumentation dadurch in klare Schritte eingeteilt.
