About the Book

The initial workshop on Eosinphils in Allergy and Related Diseases took place in Tokyo in 1991. Since then, this workshop has reported on research on eosinophils and allergy in Japan. The 1998 workshop was held at the Chiwaki Hall in Tokyo, with 30 research reports in the fields of clinical and basic science. The main contents concerned the molecular-cellular aspects of formation, activation and biology of eosinophils in relation to clinics of allergy. The organizing committee has selected 23 papers out of those presented for inclusion into these proceedings. Conspicuous among these are papers on the mechanisms of eosinophil activation and the interrelationship among eosinophil function, cell surface substance and cytokines. Many of the reports show the change of such interrelationships in allergic disease including asthma, allergic rhinitis and atopic dermatitis. Topics discussed include: eosinophil chemoattractant production from a variety of cells and their activation of eosinophils; modulation of adhesion molecule expression by cytokines and stimulated adhesion molecules; effects of adhesion molecule selection and cytokines on eosinophil functions and intracellular signal transduction; and animal models of atopic dermatitis.

Table of Contents:
Human umbilical vein endothelial cell support interleukin-3- and interleukin-5-induced eosinophil differentiation from cord blood CD34+ cells; ecalectin as a T cell-derived eosinophil chemoattractant; analysis of biological activities of recombinant rat interleukin-5; primary role of CD4+ T cells and supplemental role of mast cells in allergic pulmonary eosinophilia; IL-4 induces eotaxin in human dermal fibroblasts; regulatory mechanisms of eosinophil adhesion to and transmigration across endothelial cells by alpha4 and beta2 integrins; whole-blood flow-cytometric analysis of induction of adhesion molecules expression on eosinophils stimulated by phorbol-12-myristate-13-acetate/ionomycin; interferon-gamma increases CD62L expression on human eosinophils; adhesion to fibronectin regulates expression of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 on eosinophilic cells; functional expression of transmembrane 4 superfamily molecules on human eosinophils; CCR3 mRNA expression in bronchial epithelial cells and various cells in allergic inflammation; effect of eotaxin on the generation of reactive oxygen species from eosinophil cell line, YY-1; intracellular signalling pathways in human eosinophil activation - role of beta2 integrin, alpha-m-beta2; tumour necrosis factor-alpha mediates antiapoptotic signals partially via p38 MAP kinase activation in human eosinophils; mechanisms of eosinophil cationic protein release in the serum - role of adhesion molecules; matrix metalloproteinase-9 in peripheral blood eosinophils; NC/Nga mice - a mouse model for atopic dermatitis; atopic asthma is dominant in elderly onset asthmatics - possibility for an alteration of mast cell function by ageing through Fc receptor expression; correlation between respiratory function and airway inflammation in asthma; heterogeneity in expression of cytokine mRNA in freshly isolated peripheral blood eosinophils of patients with cutaneous-disease-associated eosinophilia; difference in apoptotic function between eosinophils from peripheral blood and bronchoalveolar lavage in chronic eosinophils and basophilic cells; overexpression of CD11b on eosinophils in atopic dermatitis - downregulation by cyclosporin A and upregulation by interleuking 5.
