Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2008 im Fachbereich Filmwissenschaft, Note: 1,7, Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz (Filmwissenschaft), Veranstaltung: Brecht-intermedial, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Der Dichter und Dramatiker Bertolt Brecht, der als einer der bedeutendsten Dichter, Schriftsteller und Autoren des 20. Jahrhunderts gilt, entwickelte bereits in seinen frühen Schaffensjahren ein Interesse am Film. Mit dem neuen Medium beschäftigte er sich intensiver, während seiner Emigrationsphase, überwiegend in den USA, von 1941 bis 1947. In dieser Zeit war er mehr oder weniger gezwungen sich dem Film zu widmen, da er hier eine Möglichkeit sah, die Existenz für sich und seine Familie zu sichern. Die Nazis bemächtigten sich nämlich der Einnahmen aus Werken, die an deutsche Verlage gebunden waren, worunter auch Brechts Tantieme fielen. Die Jahre in Hollywood, in denen er sich als Drehbuchautor versuchte, waren für ihn sehr erfolglose Jahre. Vergeblich versuchte er seine politische Einstellung und seine Ziele durch diese neue, massenwirksame Kunst, in dem streng antikommunistischen Land zu etablieren. Doch das einzige, was es ihm einbrachte, waren Verhöre vor dem "Kongreßausschuß zur Untersuchung unamerikanischer Betätigung." Auch die Zusammenarbeit mit Fritz Lang am Film: Hangmen also die, in der Brecht seine größte Hoffnung steckte, entstand nicht in seinem Sinne, da der Einfluss von Fritz Lang und dem hinzugezogenen, zweisprachigen Drehbuchautor John Wexley zu sehr Brechts eigentliche Intentionen veränderte und er darüber dermaßen enttäuscht war, dass er sich bereits nach einigen Monaten vom Film distanzierte. Hieraus resultiert nun folgende Frage: Inwieweit hat der Film sich tatsächlich von Brechts anfänglichen Absichten und Zielen weg entwickelt, beziehungsweise inwieweit hat es Brecht nicht doch geschafft sein episches Theater und seine damit verbundenen Ideologien trotz der immensen Veränderungen von Fritz Lang und John Wexley durchzusetzen?
