Der Begriff kommt aus dem Englischen und wird mit Vermarktung, Vertrieb und Absatz ins Deutsche übersetzt. Ursprünglich leitet sich das Wort Marketing jedoch aus dem lateinischen Substantiv mercatus - Markt oder mercator - Händler ab. Zur Zeit des antiken Roms galten diese Händler, die ihre Produkte anpriesen, in der damaligen Gesellschaft jedoch nicht als "everything", sondern eher als "nothing" und minderwertiger Pöbel. Marketing im heutigen Sinne tauchte zuerst ab den frühen Anfängen des 20. Jahrhunderts in "Vorlesungen über [dessen Vorläufer] Distribution" als Verb "marketing (goods)" an amerikanischen Universitäten auf. Die eigentliche Entwicklungsphase von der Bedeutung des Substantives "Marketing" begann erst 1920 mit der Publikation von Prinzipien des Marketings und gab somit den Anstoß für die Gründung von Marketinglehrer und -praktikervereinigungen. Durch Professor Dr. Meffert kam Marketing schließlich als Lehrstuhl nach Deutschland. Durch Spezialisierung und Erweiterungen wurde Marketing zu einer weltweit anerkannten betriebswirtschaftlichen Disziplin und somit letztlich zu "everything" in einem Unternehmen.
