Außerdem sollen die Motive und die verschiedenen Erscheinungsformen erläutert werden, um diese anschließend mit der Prinzipal-Agenten Theorie verknüpfen zu können. Für den Erfolg einer Crowdfunding-Kampagne sind verschiedene Faktoren und Kriterien verantwortlich, die die Bereitschaft der Kapitalgeber für eine Beteiligung beeinflussen. Die Entwicklung eines neuen Produktes oder einer Dienstleistung geht meistens mit einer innovativen Idee oder einer Vision einher. Kommen die Unternehmen in dem Verlauf der Planung und des Businessplans an dem Punkt der Liquiditätsplanung vorbei, ist meist schnell klar, dass Geld in Form von Fremdkapital oder Eigenkapital benötigt wird. Die Unternehmen stehen an diesem Punkt innerhalb der Gründung- oder Wachstumsphase vor der Herausforderung, Eigenkapitalgeber oder Fremdkapitalgeldgeber zu finden.
