Gelehrte, Dichterin, Kunstagentin, Ehefrau, vierfache Mutter - das sind kurz gesagt die Eckpunkte, zwischen denen sich das Leben der Kunsthistorikerin Erica Tietze-Conrat in den fruhen Tagebuchaufzeichnungen entfaltet. Tietze-Conrat wurde am 22. Juni 1883 in Wien geboren. Die Familie gehorte dem assimilierten judischen Burgertum an. 1905 promovierte sie als erste Kunsthistorikerin an der Wiener Universitat und heiratete im selben Jahr ihren Fachkollegen Hans Tietze (1880-1954), noch heute vor allem bekannt wegen der von ihm nach dem Ende der Monarchie durchgefuhrten Museumsneuorganisation. Die Tagebucher der 1920er-Jahre gewahren dem Leser unerwartete Einblicke in das Wiener Kunstgeschehen, das damals, wie kaum je zuvor oder danach, mit der internationalen Avantgarde in Beruhrung kam. Nach Hans Tietzes Rucktritt aus dem Staatsdienst begab sich das Ehepaar auf eine mehrmonatige Spanienreise, wobei sie auch innerlich Abstand von ihren Hoffnungen nahmen, im Sinne einer humanistischen Modernisierung in Osterreich noch etwas bewirken zu konnen. Auch in den spaten Aufzeichnungen von 1937 und 1938 begegnet man den Tietzes auf Reisen. Gemeinsam forschten sie in den grossen Museen und Privatsammlungen Europas. Was als Forschungsreise begonnen hatte, endete als Flucht vor den Nationalsozialisten. Mit scharfer Beobachtungsgabe hielt Tietze-Conrat ihre Begegnungen mit Vertretern internationaler Museen, Kunstgelehrten, Sammlern, Handlern und Kunstlern fest. Angesichts des sich abzeichnenden Zusammenbruchs wird ihr die kunstgeschichtliche Forschung zum lebenserhaltenden Bollwerk. Schliesslich gelang ihnen die Flucht in die USA, wo Tietze-Conrat an der Columbia-University lehrte. Sie starb 1958 in New York.
