About the Book

Sein Weg führte Martin Paul Kuntzsch im Jahr 1942 über 2.200 Kilometer Luftlinie weg vom beschaulichen Dorf Reichenberg, heute zu Moritzburg in der Nähe von Dresden gehörend, per Zug in den Balkan, weiter per Flugzeug auf das griechische Festland, dann auf die Insel Kreta und schließlich am 29. Juli 1942 in die Festung Tobruk. Diese wurde erst wenige Wochen zuvor vom Deutschen Afrikakorps unter Erwin Rommel eingenommen. Der Wendepunkt des nordafrikanischen Feldzugs war zu dieser Stunde bereits eingeläutet. Nach der, für das Deutsche Afrikakorps in einer Niederlage endenden, dritten Schlacht von El Alamein im November 1942 zogen sich die deutschen und italienischen Verbände bis April 1943 über 2.000 Kilometer zurück nach Tunis. Die Heeresgruppe Afrika kapitulierte am 13. Mai 1943. Fast 250.000 Soldaten gingen in Gefangenschaft. Unter ihnen auch der Unteroffizier Kuntzsch. Er fand sich Wochen später, über 9.000 Kilometer Luftlinie von dort entfernt, in einem amerikanischen Kriegsgefangenenlager in Huntsville/Texas wieder. Dort begann für ihn eine Zeit des Nachdenkens über das Erlebte und das Warten auf den ungewissen Zeitpunkt der Heimkehr. Hier begann er mit dem Schreiben der vorliegenden Zeilen.
About the Author: Martin Paul Kuntzsch wurde am 20. Februar 1907 in Reichenberg geboren. Im Jahr 1925, nach bestandener Meisterprüfung, machte sich der gelernte Tischler selbstständig. Seine kleine Werkstatt fertigte Wohn- und Gebrauchsmöbel aller Art. Im Jahr 1940 wurde der 33-jährige Familienvater in den Zweiten Weltkrieg hineingezogen. Er diente im Deutschen Afrikakorps und wurde im Mai 1943 von amerikanischen Truppen gefangen genommen. Im Kriegsgefangenenlager Huntsville, Texas/USA, schrieb er seine Kriegserlebnisse für die Familie nieder und illustrierte sie mit prägnanten Skizzen. Er kehrte im April 1947 aus der Gefangenschaft zurück und starb 1979 im Alter von 72 Jahren in Reichenberg. Der Herausgeber: Martin J. Gräßler studierte Höheres Lehramt sowie Neuere und Neueste Geschichte und Politikwissenschaft. Er unterrichtet an einem sächsischen Gymnasium und ist Stabsoffizier der Reserve mit Lehrverwendung im Fach Militärgeschichte an der Offizierschule des Heeres.
