About the Book

English summary: The memoirs of the archaeologist Akurgal Ekrem (1911-2002), published in Turkish in 1999, outline a key chapter in the cultural history of Turkey. His memoirs are important not only for his fellow countrymen, but should in translation make possible a better understanding of Turkey, its history and its culture to a wider audience in Germany, Europe and further afield. These memoirs constitute a historically enlightening, culturally important and richly illustrated record, and at the same time, provide a very personal testimony of a great scholar.
