About the Book

Konrad Szumiński wurde am 26.11.1925 in Gniezno (Polen) geboren. Seine Mutter führte die eigene Drogerie, sein Vater diente als Offizier in der polnischen Armee. In seinem Buch erinnert er sich an den unmenschlichen Aufenthalt im Arbeitserziehungslager Zöschen. Fünf Monate war er dort zwischen 1944 - 1945 als Zwangsarbeiter inhaftiert. Krankheit, Kälte, Hunger und Schläge begleiteten ihn bei seinen täglichen Arbeitseinsätzen in Leuna. Nach dem Krieg beendete er sein Studium als Chemieingenieur an der Schlesischen Technischen Hochschule und bekam für seine Arbeit in der Chemie- und Gasindustrie zahlreiche Auszeichnungen. Seit über 60 Jahren ist er glücklich mit seiner Frau Danuta verheiratet und lebt bis heute in Siemianowice Śląskie (Oberschlesien). Er ist dankbar, dass seine Kinder, seine Enkelin und sein Urenkel bisher in Frieden aufwachsen konnten. Einen Groll gegen die Deutschen verspürt er nicht. Im Gegenteil. Er schätzt die vielen beständigen und herzlichen Freundschaften, die er seit Jahrzehnten pflegt. Dr. Edward Sulek, geboren am 18.04.1954 in Pulawy (Polen), studierte nach dem Besuch des Gymnasiums in Pulawy Agrarwissenschaft in Nitra (in der heutigen Slowakei) und promovierte 1985 an der Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg. Von 1995 bis 2014 war er im Landratsamt Saalekreis verantwortlich für die Beziehungen zu den Partnerregionen. Diese für ihn sehr wichtige Aufgabe setzt er bis zum heutigen Tag ehrenamtlich als Dolmetscher und Übersetzer für mehrere Sprachen fort. Seine Motivation und sein Herzenswunsch sind der Erhalt des Friedens und der Dialog zwischen den Nationen. Vor einigen Jahren lernten sich die beiden während der Gedenktage in Zöschen kennen. Konrad Szumiński hatte diesen Teil seiner Biografie bereits kurz nach dem Krieg niedergeschrieben und so beschloss man gemeinsam, sie auch dem deutschen Leserkreis zugänglich zu machen. Seine Übersetzungs- und Herausgeberarbeit zu diesem Buch widmet Dr. Edward Sulek seiner Enkelin Helena.
