Bevor das Höhlengleichnis, als Gleichnis der Bildung selbst beschrieben und aus teils pädagogischer, teils philosophischer Betrachtungsweise gedeutet werden soll, wird zuvor das Umfeld desselben beschrieben. Hier stehen das Sonnen- und Liniengleichnis im Mittelpunkt der Ausführungen, da sich die Deutung des Höhlengleichnisses, so sagt Platon selbst, dadurch ergibt, dass man es mit dem Sonnen- und Liniengleichnis, in Verbindung bringt (vgl. Pol. 517b). Das nächste Kapitel soll das Höhlengleichnis selbst, in fünf aufeinander folgenden Phasen beschreiben. Die ersten vier Phasen beschreiben jeweils den Bildungsprozess, mittels welchem der Mensch zur Erkenntnis gelangen kann. Er wird als der Aufstieg, eine Steigerung von den Schatten über die Wahrheit bis hin zur Wirklichkeit, illustriert. Die höchste Erkenntnis erlangt der Mensch durch die Schau der höchsten Idee, der Idee des Guten. Die vier verschiedenen Erkenntnis- bzw. Seinsstufen auf dem Weg nach 'oben', sowie die Idee des Guten im Höhlengleichnis selbst, werden in zwei Unterkapiteln ausführlicher erörtert. Die fünfte Phase, die den Wiederabstieg in die Höhle behandelt ist für das platonische Bildungskonzept, unerlässlich. Das letzte Kapitel Paideia als Bildung und Erziehung wird nach einigen allgemeinen Ausführungen zur Bildung zweigeteilt: Zentral im ersten Abschnitt ist Platons Auffassung der Paideia, die für ihn eine philosophische ist und welche er kennzeichnend als "Umlenkung" (Pol. 518cd) bestimmt. Neben der Deskription einiger Merkmale dieser neuen Paideia, wird im Weiteren auch auf die sophistische Paideia eingegangen. Da die Sophisten am Anfang der abendländischen Pädagogik stehen, soll ihre Paideia in Grundgedanken skizziert werden. Gleichwohl wird die platonische Kritik in diesem Teilabschn
