Das Reisemotiv "Natur erleben" liegt in den jährlich durchgeführten Reiseanalysen regelmäßig in der Spitzengruppe. Gleichzeitig ist zu beobachten, dass der Mensch zunehmend erlebnisorientiert handelt und folglich der Erlebniswert eines Produktes oder einer Dienstleistung immer mehr in den Vordergrund rückt. Das Erlebnis ist nicht mehr die vom Kunden erwünschte Zusatzleistung, sondern viel mehr das Ziel der touristischen Angebotskonzeption. Die zunehmende Erlebnisorientierung einerseits und die enorme Bedeutung einer intakten Natur andererseits bieten Ansatzpunkte für eine innovative, erlebnisorientierte und naturnahe Angebotskonzeption im Tourismusmarketing. Für ca. 80 Prozent der Deutschen hat das Urlaubsreisemotiv "Natur erleben" eine zentrale Bedeutung hinsichtlich ihrer Zufriedenheit im Urlaub. Vor allem wegen ihrer Erholungsfunktion wird einer intakten Natur ein hoher Stellenwert beigemessen. Einige Untersuchungen kommen zu dem Ergebnis, dass sich in Zukunft die Urlaubsreisen in solche Destinationen verlagern werden, in denen intakte Natur und eine gepflegte Landschaft vorzufinden sind. Unbeeinträchtigte Natur und schöne Landschaften waren, sind und werden auch in Zukunft zentrale Elemente des touristischen Produktes sein. Opaschowski geht noch weiter und stellt fest, dass das Erleben von Natur und Landschaft "einen wesentlichen Teil der individuellen Lebensqualität" ausmache. "Der homo ludens spielt mit zunehmender Verbissenheit." So bringt es der Kultursoziologe Gerhard Schulze anschaulich auf den Punkt. Die zunehmende Erlebnisorientierung in der heutigen Gesellschaft ist allgegenwärtig und die verschiedensten Branchen haben erkannt, dass der Erlebnishunger der Konsumenten groß ist und noch zunehmen wird.
