Im Vordergrund steht hierbei die Optimierung von Lernprozessen mit Text und Bild anhand der Theorie der kognitiven Belastung. Ein vielversprechender Ansatz zur Verbesserung des Wissenserwerbs besteht darin, Lernenden die Instruktion zum aktiven Integrieren multipler externer Repräsentationen zu geben. Forschungsarbeiten, die belegt haben, dass der Wissenserwerb durch diese Maßnahme verbessert wird, lassen die Frage offen, was genau für die Verbesserung des Wissenserwerbs verantwortlich war: Die Herstellung des integrierten Formats oder die externe Handlung. Diese Frage wurde in einem einfaktoriellen Design in vier Stufen experimentell untersucht. Es wurde der Lernerfolg von 60 Studenten in vier Versuchsgruppen verglichen, denen unterschiedliche Lernoberflächen und Instruktionen mit folgenden Aufgabenstellungen vorgelegt wurden: aktives Integrieren, reine externe Handlung und reine mentale Integration. Die vierte (Kontroll-)Gruppe bekam keine spezifische Instruktion. Lerngegenstand war Aufbau und Funktion der Wärmepumpe. Zunächst wurde das Vorwissen zu diesem Gegenstandsbereich erhoben. Es folgte eine computerbasierte Lernphase. Dann wurden die kognitive Belastung, die Behaltens- und Transferleistung abgefragt. Entgegen der Erwartung zeigten sich höhere Testleistungen bei der mentalen Integration und der Kontrollgruppe als beim aktiven Integrieren und bei der reinen externen Handlung.
