Man sprach von irgend einem neuen Roman. Doktor Snyder bekannte, ihn nicht gelesen zu haben: Dazu fehlte mir die Zeit, ich habe genug zu tun mit der Wiederherstellung der alten verstümmelten Romane, und meine Quelle sind die klassischen Archive. Da gibt es zu schöpfen, meine Herrschaften! Erst heute fiel mir wieder eine der wunderbarsten Erzählungen in die Hand, eine wahre Begebenheit, die ich mir vor sechs Jahren in der Bibliothek zu Ravenna abgeschrieben habe. Es ist die Geschichte von dem Jüngling, der Frau und dem Tiger. Einer der Anwesenden entsann sich des Sachverhalts: Ist denn diese Geschichte nicht von Stockton? Darum handelt es sich eben. Stockton brachte ein Rätsel und ich bringe die Auflösung. Er schloß vor mehr als einem Menschenalter mit einer offenen Frage, auf die weder er selbst noch irgend ein Leser die Antwort wußte, und gerade auf diese Antwort kommt es an; sie enthält erst den wirklichen Roman. Der klingt freilich ein bißchen anders, als in der verfälschten und verquatschten Form, in der Sie ihn kennen gelernt haben. Ach so erzählen Sie doch! wie war denn eigentlich die Sache? - Die spielte in Rom zur Zeit des Kaisers Domitian. Da lebte ein junger, verhärmter Dichter namens Quintus Agricola; ganz Geist, ganz Träumer, ganz Seele und dementsprechend schattenhaft dürr. Durch Zufall lernte die Tochter des Kaisers, Prinzessin Eudoxia, seine Verse kennen, mit dem Erfolg, daß sie den genialen Verfasser in ihrer Nähe zu sehen wünschte. Leider verfuhr sie hierbei nicht nach der Hofregel, sondern sie verfiel auf den romantischen Betrieb der Heimlichkeit. Eine gefällige Palastdame namens Bombasta machte die Zwischenträgerin, und in den ausgedehnten Gärten des Palatin kam es in dämmriger Stunde zu Zusammenkünften, die bis zu schüchternen Handküssen gediehen. Kurzum es ergab sich ein platonisches Verhältnis, das bei aller Reinheit doch früher oder später zu einer Katastrophe führen mußte; denn der Klassenabstand zwischen dem plebejischen Dichter und dem kais
