Alkibiades ist gerade volljahrig geworden. In wenigen Tagen will er zum ersten Mal vor der Volksversammlung auftreten. Er ist uberzeugt, als Politiker dank der ihm angeborenen einzigartigen Begabung weltweit alle zu ubertreffen und deshalb zunachst Athen, dann ganz Griechenland und schliesslich die ganze Welt seiner Herrschaft unterwerfen zu konnen. Sokrates hat Alkibiades seit seiner Kindheit standig beobachtet, bisher aber nie angesprochen. Das tut er jetzt zum ersten Mal. Im ersten Teil des sich daraufhin zwischen ihm und Alkibiades entwickelnden Gespraches bringt Sokrates Alkibiades dazu einzusehen und zuzugeben, dass er sich selbst vollig falsch eingeschatzt hat, und weckt in ihm damit die Bereitschaft, sich um sich selbst und sein Besserwerden zu bemuhen. Im zweiten Teil geht es um die Frage, wie dies geschehen kann. Zunachst wird geklart, dass das Selbst des Menschen allein seine Seele ist. Mithilfe des beruhmten Vergleichs des Sich-selbst-Erkennens mit dem Sich-selbst-Sehen gibt Sokrates sodann einen Hinweis darauf, wie man zur Erkenntnis seiner selbst gelangen kann.Der Erste Alkibiades wurde in der Antike und zunachst auch in der Neuzeit hoch geschatzt. Das anderte sich, nachdem Schleiermacher ihn 1809 heftig kritisiert und Platon abgesprochen hatte. Die von Schleiermacher ausgeloste Debatte uber die Echtheit des Dialogs halt bis heute an. Legt man das methodische Gebot zugrunde, dass nicht die Echtheit, sondern die Unechtheit einer Schrift bewiesen werden muss, dann muss der Erste Alkibiades so lange als echt gelten, bis die Unechtheit nicht stichhaltig bewiesen ist. Klaus Doring zeigt, dass dies bis heute nicht gelungen ist.
