About the Book

Born, reared and educated in a boring Middlewest environment, Harcourt Forrest Wood, MD, discovers Baja California in 1978 and is excited by its wild beauty and fishing. He finds Baja California the antithesis of his flatland heritage, a wild place where he can periodically escape the intensely heavy demands of his medical practice. In Baja he also sees the opportunity to fulfill boyhood fantasies and become Rogue Male. At a remote fishing resort he meets a retired naval aviator, the cantankerous Commander Dante Tibernio, who invites him on a flight into Baja in his twin-engine Piper Aztec. Dr. Wood is so impressed by this experience, he wrests time from his busy schedule and obtains his Private Pilot license, then buys an airplane; first a Cessna 172; then, the ultimate doctor''s flying machine; a "V" Tail Bonanza. At this point the stories of his zany adventures begin. He encounters Chubascos, sharks, greedy developers, incompetent Mexican pilots, flying drug smugglers, lobster restaurateurs and many, many other colorful Baja characters. Although completely fiction, these stories are Old Baja: before the hype.
About the Author: The author entered the then new Aviation Officer Candidate Program in 1956 and flew the T-34, T-28B, T-28C, and the SNJ-5 in Basic Flight Training, and the AD-4 in Advance. He flew four models of the AD-5 on cruises aboard the USS Lexington (CVA-16) and the USS Oriskany (CVA-34). Leaving active duty in 1960, he worked as a representative of United Services and spent seven years in Europe. During that time, as an active reservists, he served at Rota, Spain: Naples, Italy: Stuttgart, Germany: and London, England. He retired from the reserves as a LCDR. In 1973 he obtained a FAA Airline Transport Pilot rating and entered corporate aviation sales. Later, he became, and still is, a partner in three restaurants in San Diego's Seaport Village where he directed the building of Harbor House, Edgewater Grill and Pier Café, which opened in 1980. For many years he flew throughout Baja California, Mexico. He has almost 5,000 hours of hands on, single pilot flight time, including a glider rating. He is proud that he ended his flying career with an equal number of take offs and landings; and, all aircraft were re-useable because he never even blew a tire!
