Eschyle est l' inventeur de la tragedie attique telle que nous la connaissons: en introduisant un deuxieme acteur sur scene, Eschyle bouleverse la scene tragique jusqu'ici reservee a un dialogue entre l'acteur et le choeur. Cependant la vie du pere de la tragedie ne nous est guere connue. Il serait ne aux alentours de 525 a Athenes, dans une famille d'Eupatrides. Eschyle a donc vecu successivement la domination des Pisistratides et les reformes de Clisthene, d'ou sans doute son gout pour la question de la justice. Citoyen exemplaire, il a participe aux batailles de Marathon et de Salamine, dont il fait le recit dans Les Perses. Pour des raisons qui nous sont restees ignorees, il quitte Athenes et s'exile a la cour de Hieron, tyran de Sicile. Ses succes furent nombreux, autant que ses pieces (la tradition lui prete plus de 73 oeuvres), dont malheureusement seules 7 nous sont parvenues.

L'edition de Paul Mazon presente en deux volumes les tragedies d'Eschyle. Le tome I rassemble Les Suppliantes, Les Sept contre Thebes et Promethee Enchaine. Aux deux tragedies guerrieres, repondent celles des condamnes, Promethee et les Danaides. L'introduction fait le point des connaissances relatives a un auteur qui fut sujet d'etudes et de glose des l'Antiquite, et propose de judicieux criteres pour distinguer la biographie de la fable. L'histoire des manuscrits est relatee en detail et assortie d'une orientation bibliographique. Chaque piece est precedee d'une notice qui lui est propre. Celle-ci fournit, tous les elements mythologiques, historiques et philologiques, necessaires a la bonne comprehension de ces pieces parfois lacunaires. Des notes accompagnent la lecture.


About the Author: Eschyle (525-456 av. J.-C.) est ne a Eleusis dans une famille d'Eupatrides. Il a vu la chute de la tyrannie et la mise en place des reformes de Clisthene qui devaient conduire Athenes a la democratie. Il aurait en outre participe, contre les Perses, aux batailles de Marathon et de Salamine. Il est pour nous le premier des grands tragiques. Reconnu de son vivant, il bouleverse les regles du theatre en introduisant un deuxieme acteur sur scene. Ses pieces ont une forte valeur morale, dans un style grandiose et image. Sur les soixante-treize oeuvres qu'il aurait ecrites, sept nous sont parvenues. Parmi elles se trouve la seule trilogie dont nous disposons, L'Orestie, qui relate l'assassinat d'Agamemnon a son retour de Troie, puis celui de Clytemnestre par son fils, et, enfin, le proces d'Oreste. De lui nous possedons encore Promethee Enchaine, Les Sept contre Thebes, Les Suppliantes et Les Perses. Paul Mazon etait specialiste de poesie grecque. Il a traduit dans la CUF les textes d'Hesiode, de Sophocle, d'Eschyle ou d'Homere. Professeur de litterature et civilisation grecques a la Sorbonne, Paris IV et directeur de l'Unite de recherche sur la medecine grecque au CNRS (1990-2000), president de l'ecole doctorale Mondes anciens et medievaux; Membre de l'Institut, Academie des inscriptions et belles lettres (1997)
