"¡Se vende isla al contado, sin gastos, al último y mejor postor!", repetía una y otra vez, sin tomar aliento, Dean Felporg, comisario tasador de la subasta en que se debatían las condiciones de esta venta singular. "¡Isla en venta, isla en venta!", repetía con voz más y más sonora el pregonero Gingrass, que iba y venía por entre una multitud en verdad excitadísima. Multitud, efectivamente, que se apretaba en la vasta sala del hotel de ventas del número 10 de la calle Sacramento. Allí había no sólo cierto número de americanos de los estados de California, Oregón y Utah, sino también algunos de esos franceses que forman una buena sexta parte de la población, mejicanos envueltos en su sarape, chinos con sus túnicas de largas mangas, zapatos en punta y gorro cónico, canacos de Oceanía e incluso pies-negros, vientres abultados, o cabezas-planas procedentes de las riberas del río Trinidad. Nos apresuramos a decir que la escena tenía lugar en la capital del estado californiano, en San Francisco, pero no en la época en que la explotación de nuevos placeres atraía a los buscadores de oro de ambos mundos, de 1849 a 1852. San Francisco ya no era lo que había sido al principio, un caravasar, un desembarcadero, una posada en que se detenían por una noche los atareados que se apresuraban hacia los terrenos auríferos de la vertiente occidental de la Sierra Nevada. ¡No! Desde hacía unos veinte años, la antigua y desconocida Yerba-Buena había dado lugar a una ciudad única en su género, poblada por cien mil habitantes, construida al respaldo de dos colinas por haberle faltado sitio en la playa del litoral, pero del todo dispuesta a extenderse hasta las últimas alturas de lo más lejano; una ciudad, en fin, que ha destronado a Lima, Santiago, Valparaíso, todas sus otras rivales del Oeste, de la que los americanos han hecho la reina del Pacífico, la "gloria de la costa occidental".
