Entre finales del siglo XV y principios del XIX, la Monarquía Hispánica fue una de las mayores y más complejas construcciones políticas jamás conocidas en la historia. Desde la meseta castellana hasta las cimas andinas; desde ciudades cosmopolitas como Sevilla, Nápoles, México o Manila hasta los pueblos y misiones del sudoeste norteamericano o la remota base de Nutka, en la canadiense isla de Vancouver; desde Bruselas a Buenos Aires y desde Milán a Los Ángeles, España ha dejado su impronta a través de continentes y océanos, contribuyendo, en no menor medida, a la emergencia de la globalización. Una aportación que ha sido tanto material - el peso de plata hispanoamericano transportado a través del Atlántico y del Pacífico fue la primera moneda global, lo que facilitó la creación de un sistema económico mundial-, como intelectual y artística. Los más extraordinarios intercambios culturales tuvieron lugar en casi todos los rincones del Mundo Hispánico, no importa a qué distancia estuvieran de la metrópolis. Durante aquellos largos siglos, en algún momento dado, un descendiente de la nobleza azteca traducía una obra de teatro barroca al nahual para el deleite de una audiencia indígena y mestiza en un mercado de la ciudad de México; gracias al contacto entre China y las islas Filipinas bajo dominio español, un sacerdote dominico andaluz terminaba, en la ciudad de Fuzhou, la primera gramática de la lengua china escrita por un occidental; un monje franciscano componía una pieza de música polifónica con letra en quechua para ser interpretada en una iglesia peruana decorada con artesonados mudéjares o un equipo multiétnico de naturalistas amerindios y españoles describía en latín, español y en las lenguas vernáculas americanas miles de plantas medicinales, minerales y animales previamente desconocidos en Europa. Y lo más probable es que la mayoría de los intercambios mencionados, y otros muchos posteriores, tuvieran lugar mientras los miembros de la Escuela de Salamanca establecían los cimientos del derecho internacional o contribuían a formular las primeras teorías a caballo entre la escolástica y la modernidad sobre el precio, el valor y el dinero; Cervantes escribía Don Quijote; Velázquez pintaba Las Meninas o Goya exponía las luces y sombras de la Ilustración europea.Cuando contemplamos las galerías dedicadas a Velázquez, El Greco, Zurbarán, Murillo o Goya en el museo del Prado en Madrid; cuando leemos a Cervantes, a Jorge Luis Borges o a Mario Vargas Llosa, o visitamos el Palacio Nacional de México, una misión californiana o el barrio de Intramuros en Manila, o cada vez que oímos hablar español con una miríada de acentos en las calles de San Francisco, Nueva Orleans o Manhattan, estamos experimentando algunos de los frutos pasados y presentes de una comunidad cultural siempre vibrante y todavía en plena expansión.Como el lector puede inferir a estas alturas, este libro trata de cómo España, y el más amplio Mundo Hispánico, ha contribuido a la historia universal y, en concreto, a la historia de la civilización, no sólo durante el apogeo del Imperio español, sino a través de un período mucho más amplio.
