El As alemán Erwin Maier condecorado tres veces con la cruz de hierro, fue derribado y tuvo que saltar en paracaídas desde su caza Messerschmitt BF 109. Al ser capturado por las tropas soviéticas pidió que le permitiesen ver al As ruso que le había derribado. Cuando se presentó ante él, Lídiya, una joven menuda con cara de niña, pensó que se estaban burlando.

Richard Beckenbauer sufre un desafortunado accidente en el gran Prix de Berlín, su coche en llamas se estrella contra la tribuna donde se encuentran altos mandos militares y el mismo Adolf Hitler. Se le acusa de terrorista y le envían a un penal a la espera de juicio. Mal herido, con las piernas rotas, y con la escasa atención medica de un enfermero, comienza a ver la vida de otra manera, cada noche sueña que vuela sobre campos dorados de trigo y centeno.
